This is the first novel I finished reading in 2024 and I couldn't have asked for a better start to my reading year. I picked up Half A Soul as I was in the mood for a lighthearted book to read post-holidays, and it did not disappoint.

Half a Soul is a historical fantasy romance set during the Regency era. The story follows Dora Ettings, a young lady hoping for a quiet debut into society. Unfortunately, there's one slight problem that might hinder this: she’s missing half her soul. And as her condition draws the attention of the surly, uncouth magician Elias Wilder, Dora finds herself immersed in the dangerous parts of London's society and faerie world alike.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, Atwater did an excellent job at creating characters that are distinct and gave good reasons for their temperament and intricacies. I also thought the growth of both main characters was highly rewarding.

What I did not expect and was pleasantly surprised by, was the layered exploration of important themes such as class, war and death. In my opinion this really strengthened both the world-building and romance of the story. It was highly satisfying to see the connection between the main characters grow naturally as they were both focused on solving an issue much bigger than themselves.

If you are looking for a fun, cozy read that also offers a light but thoughtful exploration of wider societal themes, I recommend reading Half a Soul. I am really excited to continue with the next books in this trilogy.
